I hold Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations, AWS Certified SysOps Administrator, and AWS Certified Solutions Architect certifications.
To prepare for the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations (1Z0-1085-20) exam, I created this step-by-step guide. Some sections are optional, but others are necessary if you want to ensure you will pass on your first try.
Like the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C01) and Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), the 1Z0-1085-20 is intended to demonstrate an understanding of the Cloud and the variety of resources each service offers, independent of specific technical skills addressed by higher-level certifications.
If You Have No Cloud Computing Background
Cloud computing certifications are obviously useful for technical people who want to design and manage cloud-based systems, but there are also nontechnical jobs related to the cloud, like selling or procuring cloud services. If you come from a nontechnical background, or from a technical background but know little about Cloud Computing, it's helpful to learn the basics before beginning a certification course.
Explain the Cloud Like I'm 10 is a good basic overview of what the cloud is and how it's used. It's designed for people who know absolutely nothing about the cloud and want "simple explanations that use lots of pictures and lots of examples." However, it doesn't go into much detail about the structure of Cloud Computing services. YouTube has some good free introductions like Cloud Computing Tutorial for Beginners | Cloud Computing Explained by SimpliLearn. The more familiar you are with the basics, the more Cloud Computing certification courses will make sense.
I took four different courses to prepare for my exam. Most of these are free courses offered by Oracle. An account is required.
Go through the course The Oracle Foundations Associate Cloud Certification (PASS THE EXAM) by freeCodeCamp.org on YouTube. This 3-hour course is a quick overview of things you will need to know to pass the exam.
Overview of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is a quick course offered by Oracle that covers many exam topics. It doesn't take long to go through and reinforces the concepts learned in the freeCodeCamp.org course.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations is a more in-depth Oracle course designed for the 1Z0-1085-20 exam. It's almost 4 hours long. This is the best preparation course.
Step 4 (optional):
The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Architect Associate Workshop is designed for the 1Z0-1072-20 OCI Architect Exam, so it goes into a lot more depth than is needed for the Foundations exam. Even though it goes into more details than necessary, it's worth going over once before taking the test. Run it at 1.5x speed and skip the demos to get done faster.
Step 5 (optional):
Oracle doesn't recommend reading any white papers to prepare for the exam, but these are a few you might find helpful to further understand and reinforce the concepts you need to know. Most are short and you can skip anything that didn't come up in the courses.
Learn About High Availability in the Cloud - Learn about architecting a highly available cloud topology
Learn About Disaster Recovery - Learn about protecting your cloud topology against disasters
Virtual Cloud Network Overview and Deployment Guide - The purpose of this document is to provide a basic understanding of the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Networking service and common deployment scenarios for a virtual cloud network (VCN) (PDF)
Making Sense of the Shared Responsibility Model - The shared responsibility model outlines the cloud service provider’s responsibility to maintain a secure and continuously available service and enterprises’ responsibility to ensure secure use of the service (PDF)
Best Practices for Identity and Access Management (IAM) in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - This white paper provides best practices for using the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Identity and Access Management (IAM) service when you are planning, designing, and deploying solutions on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (PDF)
Test Prep and Practice Tests
This is a 2-hour overview of many of the topics you should expect to see on the exam. It doesn't cover everything.
Oracle provides a free practice test, which will give you an idea of what kind of questions to expect.
Get Hands On Experience
Step 9 (recommended):
The exam will be much easier if you have some familiarity with the Oracle Cloud console. Sign up for a free Oracle Cloud account and click through the various offerings. Do some basic tasks like creating users, groups, VCNs, and virtual machines. Oracle Cloud has several always free offerings including virtual machines, databases, and object storage. If you have completed the courses in the earlier steps, you will know what to pay attention to in the console and what you can skip. You don't have to create any resources if you don't want to, but it's helpful to click options like Virtual Machines, Databases, and Load Balancers and learn what the various configuration options are.
Learn more about Service Level Agreements.
Before Taking the Exam
