What questions should I ask in an interview?
"So, is there anything you'd like to ask us..." Boy do those words strike fear into the hearts of most people! It's the end of the interview and now it's your turn to ask a few smart questions to impress them, but what to ask? Do NOT start asking about holiday/ vacation, or the finer details of the salary arrangements, instead ask questions that show how keen you are to work there and develop in the role.
Below are 20 great questions to ask at the end of your interview, I hope you find them helpful.
The Top Twenty
So here, you go, 20 great questions to ask during your interview. Please do NOT ask all 20 at once, 2 or 3 should be fine, 4 maximum. Make sure that you only ask questions that could not have been answered by better research prior to the interview. Also please don't repeat them verbatim, word them in a style that you're comfortable with.
- How is the team I'd be joining viewed by the rest of the organisation?
- How is success measured in this job?
- Who are the key decision-makers/ departments I'll need to be working in partnership with, and how would you describe them?
- What are you looking for in the ideal candidate?
- What would you say are the top 3 priorities for someone taking this job?
- Why did the previous person leave/ how did the position become available?
- What opportunities are there for structured learning and development?
- If I were offered this role, what could I be doing before my start date to ensure I hit the ground running?
- What's the most important thing I could do to make a positive impact within the first 3 months?
- What would you say are the biggest challenges this company is currently facing?
- What are the opportunities for promotion within the organisation?
- Why are you recruiting externally for this role?
- What's the make up of the team I'd be joining in terms of experience and qualifications?
- What would you describe as being the biggest frustrations I'd face in this role?
- Who would I be reporting directly to and how long have they been in post?
- How are the targets set and would I have any input into that process?
- How do you see the role developing?
- Have there been any recent restructures? And, if so, how did they affect the team I'd be joining?
- Who do you see as the organisations main competitors and what differentiates you from them?
- Is there anything I've said, or not said, that has given you any concerns as to whether I can do this job?

I must agree, "Do you have any questions for us?" is without a doubt the toughest question that occurs during an interview. Thanks for your wonderful questions - they should help any job seeker shine!

Great questions! Questions 4, 10, 14 and 20 are my absolute favorites to ask when on an interview. Actually, I went even a little bolder with question 20 on my last interview. "Is there any answer that I can clarify, or any information you still need that would put me at the top of your list for filling this position?"

Thank you both for your comments - it's one thing I get asked about a lot, so I thought/ hoped it might be helpful. (Brittanytodd - thanks for that, I know you use a 'z' in the US and I know these hubs have a largely US audience - but we usually spell it with an 's' in the UK, although technically either are grammatially acceptable.)

This is an excellent list that I am going to use in my next interview (well, not all of them at once, but some haha). Beth, you made a wonderful list that many people should find helpful when asked if they have any questions. (One note: you put an "s" instead of a "z" in "organization" in the first question on the list.) This is a great hub. Excellent work, voted up, etc.
