Changing Jobs Is Not Failure
Hundreds of workers, supervisors, and company owners have provided me with data regarding employment and worker retention over the last two decades and much of it can be useful to you, the job seeker.
Both employees and company supervisors have agreed generally on the robustness of certain reasons for leaving a company and switching jobs. Not only are these criteria interesting, but they are also useful to both management and workers.
Do not change jobs solely for the excitement of a new and flashier title, a new location, a different company, or what appears to be a better compensation package. Research your options at both your current company and potential new employers fully.
If you choose to leave your current position, then do so on a good note, keeping that company and supervisors as good business contacts. Make friends instead of enemies every time you can do so.
Failure To Receive A Promotion Within 3 - 7 Years.
A number of employers and company owners have confided to me that if an employee is not promoted within three years in some companies and seven years in other companies, then that workers is not likely to be promoted at all.
An employee stuck in a position that does not challenge his or her skills and expertise is likely to want to change jobs if not promoted, especially after seven years. The change can be positive in more than money and job title.
A change in job and company can provide a wider range of experience and the opportunity to deepen expertise. In addition, many employers feel that most workers master a job in three years and are ready to move up.
A dissatisfied worker at the top of his or her promotional opportunities within a company may not need to leave the company altogether.
Consider asking your supervisor for a job transfer to a division of the company that contains a greater number of opportunities for upwardly mobile employees. Stay up to date ion business news and Internet postings in your locale in order to learn about these other divisions and opportunities from the media.
When you reach the top of the hierarchy of the job chain in your field, move to another hierarchy.

Failure To Receive Employment Progress Reviews
Every regularly scheduled work review is an opportunity to gain a raise in wages and/or a job promotion.
When offered a job initially, the employee should receive an offer letter in writing that outlines a title, the supervisor's name, the exact work location, agreed upon salary and benefits, the payment schedule, initial and ongoing training procedures; the date of your first upcoming work review, an an indication of a regular review cycle.
Reviews are chances for raises, promotions, an opportunity to give suggestions, and an arena for clearing minor grievances, so you definitely want to have them.
Ask for work reviews if you are not offered them. If the request is denied, then it may be time to change companies.
Since 1990, we live in a "Continuous Improvement" society in which companies, workers, and volunteers are expected to improve measurable performance, attain new skills, and develop expanding expertise every year.
Failure To Receive Ongoing Professional Development
If your company does not offer reviews or ongoing professional development that is training for you to
- become more productive and
- earn a promotion and increased responsibility,
it might be time to find another job.
Failure Of The Company To Embrace Sustainability
A number of companies in America have been concerned with conservation and sustainability long term. However, many other companies have done embraced related practices and have seen their businesses decline in their negligence.
During World War II, Americans conserved and recycled in order to help supply the troops in Europe and the Pacific Theater. Earth Day began in 1970. Since the 1980s, significantly increasing emphasis has been placed by governments and media outlets to address:
- Inordinate Waste and Conspicuous Consumerism,
- Overpopulation, and
- Climate Change, the first two concerns leading into the third.
Greater numbers of business incentives involve sustainable workplaces and industry products and processes. For example, the Tyson company processes chicken and turkey remnants into actual petroleum oil. Johnson & Johnson runs some of their facilities entirely on methane gas created by their own waste byproducts.
Companies that do not participate to some extent in such activities as
- Community green projects, and
- Sustainable business and production methods
may be left behind in the world of successful progress.
If your company has no policies that prevent or reduce product and human resource waste, promote recycling, and similar, then notice if business seems to be decreasing.
A sustained decrease in business revenues often leads to layoffs and company closings.
Sustainability, A Way Of Life
Increasing numbers of American companies are becoming more sustainable in their practices and products. Some of the forward thinking companies have reached a place on the list of Top 50 Sustainable Companies in the world.
Examples Of Sustainable Companies
Forbes.com tells us about the Top 50 Sustainable Companies in the world. The top 10 of these companies include:
- BMW. Not only is this a luxury car company, but it has designed cost-effective police cars for America as well.
- Dassault Systems - Software company in France.
- Outotec - Construction company in Finland.
- Commonwealth Bank Of Australia
- Adidas, the shoe company in Germany.
- Enaqas - A utilities company in Spain.
- Danske Bank in Denmark.
- StarHub in Singapore - Wireless communications.
- Renckitt Benckiser Group in UK.
- City Developments Ltd In Singapore.
We come upon the first American sustainable company at Number 13:
13. Coca-Cola Company.
The next American company found ranks at Number 30:
30. Biogen Idec. This company is involved int he rapidly growing field of biotechnology.
The next American firm on the list is at Number 38:
38. Intel - Semiconductors and related equipment.
America is also last on the list:
50. Encolab, a chemical company.
In order to give yourself the best chance for a financially rewarding and otherwise satisfying and upwardly mobile career, look for these things in your current and future companies of employment:
- Real opportunities for raises and promotions.
- A solid and enforced system of ongoing employee work reviews.
- Realistic and effective opportunities for ongoing professional development.
- Dedication to sustainability.

Useful information for those in the employment world. From my experience, they seem spot on. Not receiving a promotion should be an automatic reason to push off and forward.

Some employers are suited for prison and I have known a few.
Some employees are suited for prison and I have also known some of those.
All of them should have interesting tombstone inscriptions.

Hello Patty. I am always impressed with the depth of your research and the obvious time you use in preparing your presentations.
I tired easily with my employers. Most of them were best suited for prison. The SEC shut down one company that I worked for. Senior management were criminals through and through.
