I think we shop on the same dollar store, you in PA and us in NJ. Those dollar bargains come in handy right? Lovely and well done..still like that smile..from your pic..!

Thank you Lord, we must shop at the same store! It is amazing what deals are in the Dollar Tree and online. This recession has forced me to be a serious comparison shopper. You are sooo sweet and kind.. you always make my day!

Awesome list, Tammy. I'm waiting for the Dollar Store to start carrying Dollar Store fashion items for men. Then watch me shop! Up here in Canada, McDonald's occasionally gives away free small coffee. Needless to say I take full advantage of this generous offer.

OMG what an awesome list!! You have quite an impressive imagination with a sensational sense of humor!!

Voted UP among others...sharing and linking to my Santa Letter because he might need these ideas also!! :)

Great hub, Tammy! I'm waiting for the Dollar Store to bring in their Men's Fashion items. Then watch me shop!

There's a coffee war going on up here in Canada so McDonald's occasionally offers free small coffee. I take full advantage of their generous offer.

Everyone.. I the United States.. Burger King resturaunts will be giving away free fries this Friday 12/16.. They have a new receipie. Great snack for FREE while you are out doing your Christmas Shopping.

Fortunately the items for a dollar or less are so close to a dollar in price that the Treasury Dept. doesn't lose money from the wear and tear on the change in coins....unless, of course, you still carry coins to pay for such things. ;>)

    • Sunshine625 profile image

Linda Bilyeu 5 years ago from Orlando, FL

BK already has the best fries, in my opinion. Why do companies mess with perfection! Thanks for the heads up :)

Thank you for your wonderful comments everyone..

Ramsa- my Dollar Tree sells men's flannel shirts and sweatshirts, but they are hard to come by because they sell out so fast. They are roughly made, but anyone who can sew can reinforce the seams and buttons. I want free coffee...mmmm...

Thank you for shining on my page Sunshine! I hope Santa approves! You are awesome!

Thank you Jennifer! With some comparision shopping, there are many great deals out there. I appreciate you stopping by!

      Hi Mr. P,

That is a good point.. Ebay sells the most wonderful clothing and stuff from China for PENNIES.. The items are so well made. It is tempting to buy these items, but I am afraid it will hurt those in the USA who are already losing jobs because they can't compete with those prices. Good to see you and I am glad you stopped by!

I agree with you on the Fries Sunshine.. I have never got the burnt little fry nubs at Burger King.. I hate that about McDondalds. I hope Burger King won't try to turn in McDonalds.. They were already great to me.

What an awesome list...have you been stuffing stockings? Dollar stores in Canada now charge 1.25 and if you need a bag it will cost you another 5 cents. I keep waiting for them to change the name to the 1.25 store. Fantastic list!

    • tammyswallow profile image
      Author

Tammy 5 years ago from North Carolina

Thank you Susan! That will probably happen here soon too.. :( I think it was risky years ago to name these stores the dollar store because of inflation. I am adding your link to this hub because I think everyone could use some great suggestions for stocking stuffers in this difficult financial time. I appreciate your kind words!

2 Batteries of Any Type for a dollar? That's amazing, and a Pack of Gum for the same price is unbelievable, I feel cheated paying 3,99 euros for a pack in France!

Travel size shampoos and conditioners are also very expensive in here and last time I bought a Pregnancy Test I paid more than 12 euros for it!!!

      Hey Ray,

Perhaps I should put a disclaimer, you get what you pay for lol.. I am sure you could have some fun with some nail polish or a nice ovulation indicator kit.. lol.. Thank you for reading and commenting.

Hi Princessa! These are "bargains" here.. in most stores a pregnacy test is about $15.00. But, the bargains can be found! I love makeup bargains.. on GOOD make up. The cost of beauty in the USA is high. Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

I am glad Feenix. I can't keep up with you guys politically, but I sure learn a lot! I am shocked how badly behaved some of the commenters are on some of these hubs. It is sad to know how many people in this country hate the United States. That kind of writing would drain me. I am glad you can relax over here! I stay in trouble no matter where I go.. whether it is teaching my children to put enema kits in stranger's carts.. to practical jokes at work..(It is really funny when the FTD fairy runs out of flowers and the FDS fairy must come and make a special bouquet).. to taking a toot machine to the movie theater.. I stay in trouble.. I think this is why we are kindred spirits.. You are Peter Pan and I am Tinker Bell.. :)

    • Skiffer profile image

      Hi All -

As ejacksonberg mentions - challenging economic times call for creative penny pinching, but some of the dollar finds are great in a pinch - like running to the neighborhood Dollar Tree over a supermarket - but I find some of the dollar items not worth the dollar. Like batteries, dryer sheets and razors, I will get a longer lifespan by spending a few more cents for the supermarket store brand than the dollar version.

But - with that being said - as over indulgence comes to an end, the dollar menu items at Wendy's, Burger King, McDonald's, do bring portion control front and center again.

Tammy - this was a very creative post - along with some very interesting comments and replies.

      Thanks

Thank you for your response Shiela! I agree, some dollar items can be "junky" and cluttersome. Dollar razors are a very bad idea. I do think it is smarter to pay less for throw away items such as toilet paper, tin foil, etc.. Many of the dollar items we find in stores are actually not all junky (with the exception of the batteries.. lol..)but are overstock items from other countries. I think like you and I don't skimp on things like dryer sheets and laundry and dish detergent. They just don't cut it. You have some very good thoughts. Thank you for your visit!

      Hi GameCameraExpert and Tammy -

Right, creativity with how to budget and spend our dollars was a lost art during the 80's. One of my favorite scenes from "Whose Wedding is it Anyway" was when the wedding planner was on one of her tightest budgets ever and created the center pieces all with finds from the dollar store. Pretty darn creative.

How about getting even more creative - is it possible to plan a free "stay-cation" with items from the dollar store? Like a picnic to the State Park with chips, soda, bologna, cheese and bread?

Let's get creative - what else could you plan from the dollar store besides a picnic and wedding center pieces?

I guess I shouldn't limit it to the dollar store - not with all of those dollar menus out there.

Dollar Store - Dollar Menus - where else and what else can you get for a dollar? Can you still go see a movie for a dollar?

And I thought you couldn't get much for a dollar. Wish we had a dollar tree. I know that there are 99-cent stores but the items aren't 99 cents any more they're more like $1.29. Good hub!

      Hi Skiffer,

You are right about this being a lost art. There are many creative ideas we can come up with for $1.00 items from designing baby items, making gift baskets of personal care items, making doll clothes from scraps of fabric, there is lots of fun to be had with a $1. Great thoughtful post and great fun suggestions! I appreciate you stopping by!

      Hi Flight Keeper,

Thank you for reading. Most of these items are purchaseable online, but very high shipping costs are unavoidable in this case. Taxes really raise costs to. It would be neat to compare this list with a list of items available from the 1970s and 1980s to see the price of inflation!

liked this...there are many things we can still get for 100 pennies...when i was a wee bit of a girl, i could get several bags full of candy for a dollar...a dollar was a lot of money to me then...still is...actually. the

dollar stores, and there are many varieties of those, are a boon to shoppers...if you shop carefully...inspect before you buy, you can make out like a bandit.

I liked this so much I am going to print it and keep it handy for the next time I need a lot of inexpensive items.

Thanks for the hub, Tammy. With income going down, I've found my way to the Dollar Store. I've also found that my list of what I can do without is much longer. The Dollar Store is someplace to walk into with hyper alertness and your purse firmly closed. I found that out the first time I tried to save money there. What a joke on me!

      Hi Healthy Pursuits,

I agree with you 100% I have stopped buying many things and started thrift shopping. If the economy ever recovers, I hope to keep these same habits. It is so easy to overshop at a dollar store. My weakness is candles. It adds up very quickly. The candy isles don't help either. Thank you for stopping by!

This was a great hub, I have voted it up. I thought I would have a look at what I could find for a dollar as that is about the price of a can of drink here. Found an iPhone case I liked for $0.98 and then paid $14.99 air shipping. So a slight failure by me there! (Didn't check ebay, until too late lol) - Great idea for an article Tammy. Whenever I have the chance to go abroad, I will check out these places. Thank you for introducing me to these good places which sell items at reasonably low prices. A refreshing and smart hub!

I laughed at #53 because I don't have a car, anyway but imagined myself standing around watching the meter for half an hour to make sure to get my dollar's worth. Fun hub to read! Hi tammyswallow,

Interesting selection of dollar stuff, actually there are hundreds of more dollar items for everyone in the family.

Anybody realized that all this dollar stuff is made in China? It is not just the dollar stuff you see on dollar stores.

Everything on ebay clothes, electronics, computer accessories, Chinese cellphones, mp4 players and iphone, ipad, ipod copies are very cheap compared to the brand names. I used some Chinese Gagdets and they all work very well.

Because of made in China everyone can afford lots of stuff now.

Thanks for sharing your selection of dollar items.

We have a 99 cent store not too far from where we live. I go straight to the back of the store where they sell fresh ingredients...veggies and such. Often I can buy 2 or 3 large red peppers for that price and often only 1 in the regular grocery stores is over a dollar. That is just one example. It truly pays to look for fruits and vegetables there BEFORE going to the regular stores. Quite the savings! Interesting hub!

I wish I could buy this stuff in my country for a dollar, but alas it will never be so. Oh well! Great hub though. Useful and detailed.

It's amazing your collect something just only $1. Even I went down the list I found plenty of things I would not buy. But, that's okay, thanks for putting such a great list together.

Okay Tammy, I have to show my wife this one. She's all about savings. We know all about the Wendy's frosty. That's one of her favorite things to get. We are always looking for better ways to be frugal in our daily living. Voting up!

Wow, I had no idea there were so many buys for $1! I'm going to take a look at the banana erasers. Ebay is a great source for online purchases. Thank you!

This is awesome. We have a couple Dollar Trees in our area and they are the best of all the Dollar Stores. Now I have ideas for stocking stuffers. I even got several nice looking fleece shirts from there

I love the Dollar Tree. You can't beat a $1 for sunglasses. I loose and break mine so it works for me. Thanks for visiting and commenting LoisRyan!
