Free Customer Rewards Programs A to Z

Be sure to sign up with every free customer rewards program that comes your way. Lindsay Kolowich tells us that a rewards program is a loyalty program offered by a company to customers who frequently make purchases. A rewards program gives a customer free merchandise, rewards, coupons, or even advance-released products.

A customer rewards (or loyalty) card has many names including advantage card, bonus card, club card, gold card, perks card, plus card, savings card, shopper’s card, thank you card, super card, value card, and VIP card. No matter what the name on the card, it’s still a rewards card.

Are all customer rewards programs free to join? While the majority of loyalty programs are free to sign up with, the number of fee-based programs has increased over the past several years. I will discuss fee-based platforms later in this article.

Here are three statistics about customer rewards programs:

  • Over 90% of companies now participate in some type of loyalty program.
  • A study by Accenture found that “77% of consumers participate in a retail loyalty program, 46% have joined a hotel program, and 40% are part of an airline program.”
  • Giselle Abramovich tells us that a typical U.S. household has signed up for in 19 to 29 different loyalty programs, but only actively uses five to 12 of them.

So how much value can you get from a customer rewards program? Nick Ewen reveals the return on spending for seven popular restaurant programs:

  • BJs Brewhouse – Up to 7.1%
  • California Pizza Kitchen – 5%
  • Dunkin’ Donuts – Up to 10%
  • Jamba Juice – 8.6%
  • Jersey Mike’s – 8.3%+
  • Moe’s Southwest Grill – 10%
  • Rita’s Italian Ice – Up to 14.3%

This article will teach you everything that you need to know about customer rewards programs. It is divided into five parts:

  • Types of customer rewards programs
  • Customer loyalty statistics
  • 85 examples of customer rewards programs and how they work.
  • A comprehensive list of over 250 rewards programs by category.
  • 15 food apps that will give you freebies and discounts just for signing up or after making a minimum purchase.
  • Restaurants and coffeehouses that will give free food or beverages on your birthday if you are a member of their loyalty program.

Author’s note: Although I have made every effort to provide you with accurate, timely, and trustworthy information, I cannot guarantee that such information is correct, effective, or up-to-date at the time of your access. In addition, I do not endorse any of the customer loyalty programs mentioned in this article.

Types of Customer Loyalty Programs

Here are three types of customer loyalty programs:

Points loyalty programs – With a points-based platform, you earn points based on the amount of money that you spend with a company. Here are five points-based programs that are simple and easy-to-understand:

  • Counter Burger: Receive 10 points for every $1 that you spend, 200 points just for registering your card, and 300 points for referring a friend to the program. Once you earn 600 points, you’ll receive a $5 reward.
  • DICK’s ScoreCard - Receive one point for every $1 spent at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Field and Stream, or Golf Galaxy. Once you reach 300 points, you’ll receive a $10 reward to use on a future purchase.
  • DSW Rewards: Receive 10 points for every $1 that you spend on shoes, bags, and accessories. Once you reach 250 points, you’ll receive a $10 reward to use on a future purchase.
  • Safeway: Receive one point for every dollar spent on groceries, two points for every dollar spent on qualifying gift cards, and one point for every dollar spent on pharmacy items. Once you earn 100 points, you’ll receive 10 cents off per gallon of gas up to 20 gallons at Safeway fuel stations or at participating Sunoco stations.
  • Target REDCard – Get 5% off at the register and free shipping on qualifying orders at Target.com.

Tiered rewards programs- Alex McEachern tells us that “Tiered programs are customer loyalty programs that offer different rewards depending on which tier a customer is in. In order to progress to the next tier, customers must pass a pre-determined milestone. Typically, these milestones are measured by how many dollars a customer has spent. . . .”

Here are some examples of tier-based loyalty programs:

  • EB Games' Edge Rewards
  • Ecodiva Beauty’s Loyalty & Love
  • e.l.f. Cosmetics’ Beauty Squad
  • Marriott Rewards
  • Starbucks Rewards
  • Switch Kiteboarding’s Switch Rewards
  • Virgin Airlines' Flying Club
  • Wyndham Rewards

Courtesy of TheLoyaltyBox.com, here is an overview of the Virgin Airlines’ Flying Club, which offers immediate travel rewards to their customers:

  • Members get inducted at the Club Red level where they automatically get discounts on flights, rental cars. and hotels in addition to mile-based rewards.
  • Club Silver members get 50 percent more miles on every purchase, as well as an expedited check-in process and priority stand-by seating.
  • The Club Gold members have access to double miles and get priority boarding privileges. Some airports even have an exclusive clubhouse only for top-level members where they can enjoy cocktails or have a massage before they board.

Fee-based rewards programs– With a fee-based loyalty program, you must pay a one-time or recurring fee before receiving benefits. Lance Du Chateau observes that customers are more committed to a fee-based program because they feel compelled to take advantage of the benefits that they have already paid for. He adds that customers receive instant gratification from a fee-based program because they do not have to wait until they have earned enough points to receive benefits.

Here are five examples of fee-based platforms:

  • Amazon Prime
  • AMC Theatres
  • Bed Bath & Beyond's BEYOND+ (currently in beta testing)
  • Landry’s Select Club
  • REI (Recreational Equipment Incorporated)
  • Restoration Hardware

Bed Bath & Beyond is currently beta testing BEYOND+, a loyalty program that has an annual fee of $29. Here are the benefits of the program:

  • Receive 20% off your entire purchase both in-store or online.

  • Get free shipping with no minimums.

Now let’s take a look at Landry’s Select Club and see how this fee-based program works:

First, Landry's is a hospitality chain that owns and operates over 500 properties, including more than 40 unique brands such as Landry's Seafood House, McCormick & Schmick's Seafood & Steaks, Rainforest Cafe, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., and The Boathouse Restaurant.

With Landry’s Select Club loyalty program, you pay a one-time $25 enrollment fee and receive instant benefits including a $25 reward on your next restaurant visit. You also receive a $25 birthday reward, priority seating, a $25 reward for every $250 that you spend at any of Landry’s 500 locations, and other exclusive benefits.
