Many Companies Will Send You Promotional Items For Free

Did you know that many companies, from a variety of industries, will send you stickers and other promotional items for free?

All you need to do is ask, whether by written letter, email, or by filling out a form on the brand's website. It is possible to acquire many of these promotional items without ever paying for a letter.

If you are looking to collect a lot of stickers, then sending out letters is the way to go. Many more companies participate in this type of promotion. Many brands refer to this as a "SASE", or self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Contact Forms are found by going to the brand's website and finding the Contact page. Most often a link is found in a link towards the bottom of the webpage.

E-mail Links can be clicked to open a new message to the company if you have an e-mail client installed on your device. If you don't, then select the address, copy it, and paste it into your normal e-mail client.

Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelopes are envelopes addressed to yourself, that you send to companies. They throw the stickers in, seal them up, and drop them in the box. Most brands are quick to respond. On average it will take a week or two to get your mail, depending on where you live in respect to their address. While a number have come back in just a couple of days, some of them have taken as long as a year to come back. A handful were returned to me due to an address change, and a few never made their way back to me.

Envelope #1

The first envelope you need to prepare is the one that will be returned to you with stickers enclosed.

Follow these directions to fill it out correctly:

  • Center: Your Name and Mailing Address.
  • Left Corner: Company Mailing Address.
  • Right Corner: Postage

S.A.S.E. Example
S.A.S.E. Example

Warning: Neglecting to apply proper postage to your envelope may result in the letter not being returned.

Do not seal the envelope addressed to you! This advice sounds obvious, but it happens.

Letter To Company Example
Letter To Company Example

Envelope #2

Address the second envelope with the address of the company you wish to contact in the center and yours in the upper left corner.

Double check that both letters have been filled out correctly, then apply stamp(s) to each envelope.

Next, fold envelope #1 in half, or thirds, and place it into envelope #2.

If a clean fold is not applied to the envelope then the entire package may cost more than anticipated, be returned to you, or be ignored completely.

Personal Note To Brand

This step is an important one. Although you may succeed in obtaining stickers without sending a missive, chances are you are going to get the bare minimum. The employee that reads your inquiry has likely read a hundred requests before yours. This is where stock messages get ridiculous.

So my advice is simple, and it may or may not be a good idea. First of all, I make it as personal as possible. I tell them all about my experience with their products. If you have none, don't make it up. These brands send out stickers because it is free advertising. A potentially new customer is exactly what they're sending stickers out for.

The other piece of advice that I would give is to make your message stand out, whether through email or snail mail. While there are a few brands who adhere strictly to sending out the exact same amount of stickers to everybody, many will reward your effort.

Send Your Letters

Finally, place the S.A.S.E. inside of the envelope addressed to the company you're attempting to contact, along with a letter if you have written one.

Now you're finally finished! Put together a stack of these, and before you know it, you will be swimming in free stickers.

Sending Email or Web Requests

Your e-mail subject title should read "Sticker Request" or something similar. Writing the missive is the simple. Just tell them why you like their company, and ask for stickers.

  • Include your mailing address in the initial message, if you don't then your request may go ignored.
  • Every so often, you will receive no response until you get a letter in the mail. Patience is key.
  • Making your message stand out, or making the person reading your message smile, are the best strategies to receive more stickers.
  • On average, most companies will take between two and four weeks to deliver, but that's never guaranteed. I have waited an entire year for more than one letter to return.

In response to Taylor McCracken's comment about postage:

On some, usually smaller envelopes, a "Forever" stamp is enough to get your letter back. I also suspect that the reason that some were not returned to me was due to only one stamp being on the self-addressed, stamped envelope.

With the larger, 9 x 12 manila envelopes, I put $0.68, or a "Forever" stamp, and an "Additional Ounce" stamp, which costs $0.21.

This is usually more than enough, and depending on the employee of the company who reads your inquiry, may net you more stickers.

As far as international postage, I have no idea. I have never sent a letter to any of the Canadian or other International addresses, simply because I don't know where to buy that counties postage.

I had bookmarked a website where you can buy postage online, from various countries, but have never used this service.

Hey, I work for a company that gets tons of sticker requests. Pro-tip, don't use stock emails. Especially " I am not exaggerating; I have spent every spare dollar on [PRODUCT] and don't plan on stopping any time soon." Make it personal. Just ask for some stickers.
