6 Brands Committed to Giving Back
Everyone can relate to how good it feels walking out of a store after buying something you’ve always wanted or impulsively buying something you fell in love with.
That shopping satisfaction can quickly be replaced with remorse if the price isn’t justifiable or if you find a better version of the product somewhere else. Well, kicking buyer’s remorse is one of the great benefits you reap from investing in brands who actively give back.
Choosing to support companies with meaningful mission statements is easier than you’d think. In fact, some of the most popular stores in the United States donate billions of dollars to charity programs every year.
Walmart is a prime example. We’ve all seen the amount of Walmart ads triple after a natural disaster or during their holiday charity programs. The company pledged over $30 million in hurricane relief after Harvey struck last fall, and that was only a small portion of the total money they donated in 2017.
The best part is, they aren’t just donating cash. Walmart’s mission to give back is founded on three pillars: opportunity, sustainability, and community. Meaning they provide millions of people with jobs, meals, natural disaster relief, and even presents on Christmas morning.
If you’re not big into Walmart and do your supermarket shopping at Target instead, you're still in luck. Before the Target Foundation was established in 2000 it was known as The Dayton Company, named after George Dayton. Being a service-oriented man, Dayton spent his life sharing the importance of giving back to his employees, and ultimately his community.
Today, the company’s donations go to eradicate world hunger, promote continued education, provide affordable art and culture opportunities, support natural disasters, and writing public safety grants. Target’s total sales have gone down in the last few years, but they continue to give back just as generously each year, if not more.
3. Wells Fargo
You can even bank with a brand rooted in service. Even then, Wells Fargo isn’t your only option. However, they do donate the most. Each year the company gives 1.2 to 1.5 percent of their total earnings to various charity programs and organizations. In 2015, this was $281.3 million. The funds are split between service projects and environmental grants.
After doing a little research you’ll find that most banks give back in one way or another, the trick is finding one that funds programs you align with most.
4. Spiritual Gangster
After you’ve found some companies to support that you’ll be interacting with weekly, or even daily, start looking into clothing and beauty product brands that give back. Spiritual Gangster is a yoga-inspired clothing company founded on the mentality that all beings deserve to feel happy, equal to one another, and free.
This outlook on life is portrayed through different sayings and designs of the pieces in their clothing lines. Some combine quotes from ancient wisdom with modern styles, attracting a quickly growing following of young yogis, hipsters, athletes, and other mindful people. A percentage of every sale is donated to the community through various organizations including Feeding America, the Cambodian Children’s Fund, Make a Wish Arizona, and the Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
That feeling of buyer’s remorse mentioned earlier — Sephora is a big contributor for women. It’s nearly impossible to walk through that store without seeing a few things you're tempted to buy. Yet, you'll feel much better once you read the Sephora Stands mission statement after all those years of inessential purchases:
"Things happen. People need help. And standing strong doesn’t have to mean standing alone. We stand together with our employees to provide time, money, and support to the causes, communities, and people we believe in."
This support includes partnerships with over 500 nonprofit organizations, grants written through the Sephora Stands Together Fund, and a matching gift program. Plus, a good number of Sephora employees are active volunteers.
Why not fill up at gas stations you know are giving back to the community too? The ExxonMobil Foundation is long-known for its dedication to service and has been sponsoring education, health, the environment, and employee involvement since the Esso Education days, the foundation's predecessor. In 2000, when Exxon Corporation and Mobil Corporation merged, the organization’s new name was born.
Their biodiversity offset programs and conservation efforts speak to their commitment to the environment. Despite the controversy behind oil drilling, ExxonMobil has focused on minimizing these aftereffects and attempts to make up for harm done through various contribution programs.
With so many generous brands to choose from, investing in companies who give back is actually a reasonable goal. Better yet, purchases can feel even more fulfilling than before. Challenge yourself to question the values of a company before jumping to buy. Here are six brands you can trust - enjoy the pursuit of finding more.
