Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is really a tricky process. If you are a SEO analyst or webmaster, you can agree with me that it is quite challenging to improve your website's ranking in Google and other search engines.

Due to a large amount of poor content on the web, search engines have developed algorithms to rank pages based on their worthiness and usefulness. For example, Google has algorithms such as Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird which improve the rankings of websites with valuable content and penalize the ones with low quality content.

If you want to increase Google ranking for your website and get its content in the top search engine result pages (SERPs), you must get SEO right! You must identify SEO techniques and tricks that can help optimize your website and make it worthy to Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines.

Based on my own experience, the optimization process is however not rocket science! In this article, I am going to discuss the best SEO tips for improving Google ranking for your website in 2018. Read on to see how you can get your website in the top SERPs.

Best SEO Tips for Improving Google Ranking in 2018, in Brief

1. Identifying the right keywords and key phrases.

2. Creating quality content and performing on-page optimization.

3. Tapping the SEO benefits of social media.

4. Getting enough and quality backlinks.

1. Identifying the Right Keywords and Key Phrases

Identifying the right keywords and key phrases for your topic is a very crucial task and a great starting point for SEO. One of the best ways to find keywords and key phrases is through keyword research.

In simple terms, keyword research is a process of finding and analyzing search words and phrases that bring visitors to a website. It is facilitated by tools such as Google Keyword Planner, Niche Finder, Wordtracker, and Ubersuggest.

Before writing your content, you need to use these tools to choose and analyze a few keywords and key phrases for your topic then include them naturally in your content.

Another important thing in keyword research is to come up with secondary and tertiary keywords and key phrases. These are basically the alternatives to your primary key terms or key phrases, and are also crucial in driving visitors to your website.

When it comes to using the keywords and key phrases, you need to ensure that they appear in the URL, title, summary, headings, and throughout the rest of the body text. But it is not recommended to stuff them to prevent your website from being categorized as a webspam and consequently getting ranked poorly.

2. Creating Quality Content and Performing On-Page Optimization

Creating quality content and performing on-page optimization are great ways to make your pages appear highly relevant to search engines. In this section, I will touch on the title, URL, summary, and body copy, but focusing on on-page optimization. Remember, on-page optimization includes other techniques such as keyword research and link building, but these have been covered in other sections of this article.

Title

It is highly recommended to choose a title that accurately describes the content of your page. The title also needs to be short but informative. In addition, it should not be stuffed with keywords as this can lead to your website being penalized by search engines.

URL

According to webmasters, it is important to create search engine friendly URLs that feature some of your keywords. Search engines crawl URLs, so you need to make them pleasing to the engines. Short URLs with the right key terms are highly recommended.

Summary

In most cases, a summary appears in the search results alongside the title. You should therefore make it informative and interesting. You should be able to tell what the page is all about in the summary. It is also recommended to add some of your keywords in the summary.

Body Copy

People enjoy reading well written and informative content. You should therefore create a copy that is free from spelling and grammar mistakes. Your content should also be unique and well organized and consisting of at least 300 words.

To improve the readability of your text, you need to include headings such as H1, H2 and H3, and it is recommended to add some keywords in them.

If your text features images and videos, it is highly recommended to describe them and add things such as alternative text (ALT text), titles, and captions.

Other things that you can add to your page include anchor text or internal links and tags. According to SEO analysts, these components should be descriptive, concise, and relevant. Moreover, if you decide to include link ads or even banner ads, you should ensure that they don't interfere with the readability of your page.

3. Tapping the SEO Benefits of Social Media

According to SEO professionals, web pages with a large number of social signals appear in the top SERPs. Social signals here refer to Facebook likes, comments and shares, tweets, Google + shares , and Pinterest pins, among other social channel interactions.

Pages with many Facebook signals have been getting top rankings since the origin of social media, but Google+ signals are getting strong and are highly likely to become more important than Facebook signals in the near future.

Studies show that pages that rank top in Google have over 2500 Facebook signals, 300 Twitter signals, 80 Pinterest signals, and 150 Google+ signals.

Social media is therefore an important SEO technique, and the best thing is that you can easily integrate your website with different social channels. Most website design platforms offer simple and quick ways to add social media links to your pages.

4. Getting Enough and Quality Backlinks

Backlinks show the level of relevance and usefulness of your content, and they can therefore give your website an edge in search engine rankings. The SEO effect of backlinks is determined by the number and quality of backlinks.

As for the number of backlinks, websites with a large number of backlinks have been found to rank higher compared to the ones with a small number of backlinks. The links have been studied to be more valuable if they come from websites with content that relates well to your content.

On the side of quality, backlinks that have your keywords and the "Follow" feature are usually of high quality and can improve the rankings of your page. In addition, if the backlinks are from the same country as your website, you can enjoy even higher quality from them.

Moreover, backlinks from website with high SEO visibility are more valuable than backlinks from website with low SEO visibility. This is because websites with high SEO visibility are usually in good standing with search engines and generate high traffic.

Bonus SEO Techniques

These are basically off-page SEO techniques. When implemented together with social media, they can significantly improve your website's ranking in search engines.

If you have not been using these tips and techniques, I would encourage you to start implementing them and your website will start performing better in search engines.
