10 Reasons Why People Are Poor: "I Have No Money!"

Why are some people poor?
Why are some people poor?

Why Are Some People Poor?

If everyone wants to be financially successful, then why isn't everyone wealthy?

The answer isn't a simple one. Of course, there are circumstantial reasons, like living in an area where there's too much competition for jobs and Walmart is the only place hiring, having no mentors, and not having access to a good education. Of course, institutional racism and sexism exist, and as they say, it does take money to make money.

But sometimes, being poor is a state of mind. Sometimes, being poor seeps into your brain and takes over. I have created this list to help show some of the destructive behaviors, mistakes, and ideologies that people fall into that may keep them from achieving success.

Habits of a poor person.
Habits of a poor person.

#10: Poor People Are Unable to Manage Their State

By "state" I mean your physiological and emotional state. Simply put, this is how you feel in the moment. You can be the most talented person in the world, but if you are in a disempowered emotional state you can't achieve crap.

You are in a disempowered state if you feel overwhelmed, uncertain, or fearful. This will influence your decisions and undermine your ability to reach your aspirations and goals. If you find you are constantly feeling powerless, and you don't fight that feeling, then you are only setting yourself up for failure.

As destructive as the disempowering states are, achieving an empowering state of mind will give you the mental edge and attitude that you need to be successful. Here is a list of empowering mindsets for business: certainty, confidence, clarity, courage, conviction, ambition, and passion. By remaining in these states the majority of the time, you will be better equipped to handle the hurdles you will encounter.

I understand that you can't manage your state every minute of every day. You are not a robot. We live in a world where stuff happens, but when things start to go awry, that's when state management really matters. When something goes wrong, most people create a bullshit story to justify why they can't have what they want. It stops them from being honest with themselves and seeing things as they really are. You can survive a setback more strongly by thinking your way through the following steps:

  • Imagine your life as a map.
  • Your goal: Wealth and success.
  • Step one: See things as they really are.
  • Step two: See things as better than they are.
  • Step three: Make a plan to get there.

Why I have no money.
Why I have no money.

#9: Poor People Set Impotent Goals

The reason most people are not successful is not because they set their goals too high and therefore miss them, it's because they set their goals too low and hit them. If your goals are low and you keep hitting them, then you need to raise your standards and ambitions. You need to have a continuing dedication to going further than those around you. Don't set your goal for average because average sucks.

On the other hand, don't set your goals so high that they become unrealistic, because people abandon unrealistic goals. Instead, set your goals just above your comfort zone so that they inspire you to continue working toward them. The right goal will help you secure a better future for not only you, but also your family.

The proper goal will bring you wealth. Money is simply a way of achieving freedom.

Why "The Secret" Doesn't Work: Dreaming Isn't Doing
Why "The Secret" Doesn't Work: Dreaming Isn't Doing

#8: Unsuccessful People Subscribe To "The Secret"

The philosophy outlined in the book The Secret is not only counter-productive, it is a load of crap. According to The Secret, the way to gain success is to go into a quiet room in your house, turn off the lights, close the shades, sit on the couch, and imagine a check with a big number written on it. If you believe in The Secret, eventually this check should show up at your door. Does this work? No! Why would it?

If this is your strategy for success, the only thing that will eventually show up in your mailbox is an eviction notice. I believe in manifestation, but I believe you have to take action and go out and meet it. You simply will not achieve success or wealth if you don't take action towards it.

I tried The Secret and, when nothing happened, I tried something different: I worked towards my goals and I achieved success.

Slave to a paycheck.
Slave to a paycheck.

#7: Poor People Have Limiting Beliefs About Life and Money

Poor people believe they are creatures of circumstance. Because of this, life happens to them. Rich people believe they are creators of circumstance. Because of this, they create opportunities within their lives.

There isn't any more destructive belief in the world than to think that life happens to you. Here are three things that happen to you when you believe that you don't create your own destiny:

1) You play the blame game. You blame anyone and everyone for why you don't have what you want. You blame the government, your family, your boss, the economy, or the people on Wall Street. If you do this, you are powerless to achieve success.

2) You justify your situation to yourself and to those around you. You use sentences that start with "It's because...". For example, "It is because the economy stinks that I'm not where I want to be," or "It is because people are unfair that I don't have what I want," or "It is because money doesn't really matter that I don't have as much as I would like." By justifying your current situation, you accept your current situation.

3) You complain, thereby attracting and moving toward a negative reality. When you complain, what do you focus on? All the crap in your life, and if you focus on all the crap, what do you become? A magnet that attracts more crap. Also, you must distance yourself from those around you who complain, as they may influence your state in a negative way.

Poor people believe money doesn't matter. Rich people value money and know it matters. I'm not saying it is the end-all, be-all, but money is a beautiful tool. When you have it you can use it in countless ways: to help others, travel, or take care of your parents. Money allows for the freedom to do the things that you want to do. I am not saying that money creates happiness, but a lack of money is a passport to misery. I say solve the money problem and then solve the higher problems afterward.

How to stay poor: Listening to the wrong people.
How to stay poor: Listening to the wrong people.

#6: Poor People Choose Bad Mentors

You must be careful who you choose as your mentor. People without money are very quick to offer their advice, and the world is full of people who claim to be life coaches, business coaches, or success coaches. The scary thing is that most of them haven't achieved anything. If you find a life coach on the Internet, how do you know they've actually achieved something?

On the flip-side, rich people can make for bad mentors, too. In the movie Wall Street, the character Gordon Gekko says, "Greed is good." I made the mistake of taking this line to heart. I thought that greed was something from which I could draw motivation.

The truth is that greed is not good. Ambition and passion are good. Greed is destructive. The first thing that happens when you get greedy is that your ethics become compromised. You want to make as much money as you can, as fast as you can. And it doesn't matter who gets hurt along the way.

However, if the person you are modeling yourself after is motivated by greed, you do not need to follow in their footsteps entirely. You can pick and choose which characteristics to emulate. You can emulate their ambition, but not their greed. You can incorporate their strategies without incorporating their ethics.

Be careful with who you pick as your mentor. Don't pick the unshaven guy on the side of the road wearing the dirty sweat pants, and don't choose the guy whose decisions violate your ethics.

Habits of poor people: Living in fear.
Habits of poor people: Living in fear.

#5: Unsuccessful People Are Controlled by Fear

Fear is a natural component of the business world. If the path to success were clear-cut and infallible, then everyone would be wealthy. Because it isn't, everyone must deal with situations that make them anxious. There are three different ways to process and manage fear: The first two options will destroy your chances for a successful and healthy life, while the third gives you the mindset you need to use fear to your advantage.

1) Some people pretend that fear does not exist. The people who manage fear through ignoring it end up in a life filled with poverty and misery. By ignoring fear, you let it control you because you neither acknowledge it nor learn how to deal with it. Unacknowledged fear renders you impotent in your efforts to reach your goals, and this is the most disempowered state for wealth and success.

2) Other people act in spite of fear. This way of dealing with fear allows you to achieve certain goals despite being afraid; however, it leads you to anxiety. Yes, you will have wealth, but you will constantly be afraid of taking the wrong step. These people are hung up on worries like "What if I fail?" and "What if I don't hit my goal?" This results in a situation where you second-guess every decision and live in fear of failure.

3) Successful people embrace fear and let it motivate them. These people achieve their goals and do so by acknowledging their fear without letting it ruin their enjoyment of their success.

Habits of poor people: Trying to reinvent the wheel.
Habits of poor people: Trying to reinvent the wheel.

#4: Unsuccessful People Try to Reinvent the Wheel

Poor people always try to come up with something spectacular and new to make their fortune. This is the biggest trap you face as you work toward your goals. Instead of something new, what you need is a proven system, one that you know works and will help you gain success.

Warren Buffet once said, "I try to buy stock in businesses that are so wonderful that an idiot can run them. Because sooner or later, one will." I believe this statement, and that's why I recommend Jordan Belfort's Straight Line System. It's so simple that it's being used to help hundreds of struggling companies and thousands of people to become wealthy.

What is the system that you have in place? Are you trying to reinvent the wheel or do you have one that is proven?

#3: Poor People Are Lousy at Business

If you don't have any business experience, it's nothing to be ashamed of. No one is born with business skills. Someone has to teach or show you the ropes. This is why you must be careful when choosing your mentor. You want to make sure that you're getting the best information available.

Watching money disappear.
Watching money disappear.

#2: Poor People Are Uncomfortable with Words Like "Sales," Marketing," and "Persuasion"

Either you're selling or you're failing. You may not sell products, but you have to have the ability to sell yourself and your concepts.

You don't need to master persuasion, but you need to become effective at it. It is the most crucial skill that any person could have. Even Warren Buffet, who many don't think of as being a master salesman, has admitted publicly that persuasion is the single most important skill he has.

You don't need to become a hardcore salesperson, but you do have to learn how effectively persuade so that people will invest in you. If you are able to sell your vision, people will follow you because you can show them your value as a human being.

Without the proper tools of persuasion, you could create the next big microchip or the cure for cancer and no one would invest in your idea because you aren't able to influence them to do so. If you can't get others to buy in to your ideas, you will fail at reaching your goals.

This is why I recommend the Mastering Influence Program. It is the most effective way to close any human being who is closeable. There is no pressure involved for either the buyer or seller, and it isn't so much like selling as it is taking someone from one point to another in a logical decision-making process.

Selling yourself short.
Selling yourself short.

#1: Unsuccessful People Slave Away for a Paycheck

There are only two jobs where you can make real money if you work for someone else:

1) If you work for heavy commissions.

2) If you work in the investment banking industry and can leverage off of a huge company's assets.

Other than these two exceptions, if you really want to get ahead in life, you have to own your own business. I am not saying that you need to quit your job immediately. You need to have the right mindset in order to start your own successful business without quitting your job, or having to put up a lot of money. You need to know how to raise (not borrow) money cheaply.

At some point, if you want to be wealthy you have to get your own business. Otherwise you are a pawn in someone else's game.

Do you work for yourself or for someone else?
Do you work for yourself or for someone else?

Scoring Your Aptitude for Success

Here is a brief quiz so that you can see how prepared you are for success. As you look them over, give yourself points on a scale from 10 (you do this all the time) to 0 (you never do this). Think of your score as a golf score: the smaller, the better. This is for your own benefit, and you will never have to reveal the numbers you come up with.

You are unable to manage your state. You often feel overwhelmed, uncertain, or fearful about decisions or events in your life. When something goes wrong, you find yourself blaming outside forces instead of looking at the situation honestly.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You set impotent goals. You find that you often reach the goals that you set with little effort or you find that your goals are so lofty that you give up on them after a period of time.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You subscribe to The Secret. You believe in the philosophy of The Secret, that by simply focusing your thoughts you can bring specific events to pass without action.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You have limiting beliefs about life and money. You believe that you are a creature of circumstance and that you do not control your own destiny. You play the "blame game," justify your current situation to those around you, or complain about why you don't have the things you want or perhaps, you tell yourself that money doesn't matter.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You choose bad mentors. You met your mentor (or life coach) over the Internet or you are unsure if his or her achievements are substantial enough to qualify him or her to give you guidance. Or maybe your mentor condones greedy behavior and has ethics that conflict with your own.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You are controlled by fear. You think that you do not have any fear and that it does not affect your decisions in any way, or you acknowledge your fear and make decisions in spite of it, but you often find yourself uncomfortable with the decisions you've made.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You are trying to reinvent the wheel. Your system for success doesn't have a reliable track record of working because it is new, untried, or untested.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You are lousy at business. You may have a job or might have taken some college business classes but you have little or no real-world experience running your own business.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You are uncomfortable with words like "sales," marketing," and "persuasion." You are uncomfortable with the idea of selling others or you feel you don't have the skills to effectively sell yourself and your ideas.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

You slave away for a paycheck. You are not in a commission-based position and work for someone else.

Your points: _______ (10 = I do this all the time; 0 = I never do this.)

Now add up your points here: _________

Here's the good news: Even if you do every one of these things and got a 100/100, you can be helped. No matter what your score is, you can turn it around and put yourself on the road to wealth. Even if you scored a 0/100, you still have something to learn. So don't just sit there, go out and do it.

What is your aptitude for success?

How did you do on the test?

  • I scored 0-10. I think I'm doing pretty well.
  • I scored 11-20—still have something to learn, but I'm on my way.
  • My score was 21-30: There are some areas I'd like to work on.
  • I scored 31-40. I've got some reevaluation to do!
  • My score was 41-50: I'm only halfway there (or halfway not there).
  • I scored 51-80: It's definitely time to change my mind.
  • If I scored 81-100, does that mean I'm hopeless?

Great page. Perhaps you should add some famous people to your page who have followed the advise outlined. For instance, Milton Hershey (the chocolate company king) would fit under the "fear" section. During the Depression, Hershey chose to SPEND money when everyone else was closing up shop. His company thrived, his community thrived as did his workers. Fear, when used correctly can motivate you or when used incorrectly can cripple you and hold you in place.

This is GREAT stuff! Blessed.

My own belief is that most people have little to no understanding of wealth and the roles that money may (or may not) play in the creation of wealth. Control, education, leverage, responsibility, and action are all critically important.

POOR PEOPLE ARE POOR... If everyone was a doctor who would be there to flip burgers. The world needs the poor. the world need the rich. Poor people are poor because with out poor people, the world just wouldn't work right. Coming from someone who is a member of the working poor class... o ya.. I make Liquid media for Med's and research. Where would the world be with out my type of poor. What a sad and incorrect publication.

The royal we, we the plural we and the individual have, accept it or not, been brain washed by governments and bankers that we the poor can only be poor. That is a lie. How did the rich get rich, by ripping everyone else off? no. By corruption, lying and cheating? No. They got massively rich by doing what poor people don't do. Get financially educated so you can independently figure out what is and is not a good investment. Learn to work smart meaning don't do the dumb employee thing. Learn to take educated risks and step out with or without peer support.

This page is missing about 20 other reasons why people can not make much money, for instance, being employed by wal-mart, no father figure, no college degree, living in an area with too much competition. Not all of it is a state of mind, if what the author is saying were the case the word 'circumstance' would be just a word and not a state of being.

I disagree with you try to re-invent the wheel....Albert Einstein when asked what distinguishes him from the average person. He said, "When someone is asked to find a needle in a haystack they are done after the first needle...I however search for all possible needles." I do not disagree with your method, but Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Re-invented the method of light. Andre Michelin actually re-invent the wheel and countless people are re-creating the world as we know it. By approaching a problem and figuring it out my friend that makes you just intelligent. But, when you can re-create the problem re-invent the answer my friend that spawns an inexplicable trait that has been admired for centruies. So what if Warren Buffet disagrees or this guy up here disagrees, threw creative genius we become rich. Threw discovering new ways better ways that is how many people become rich. And you don't need to subscribe to a book. Take a college course and don't feed some scam artists knowledge the only reason he has power is because he makes people think he knows. Where are your credentials this blog lacks rhetoric it lacks ethos. And I my friend am a 19 year old kid. Who will change the world.

anonymous 3 years ago

@anonymous: Yeah definitely where did the other go to college he has no credentials. How do we know he is rich?

Is it just me or how do we know if this guy is even rich?!

anonymous 3 years ago

Wow! I like your last line about being a "pawn in someone else's game of chess." You got that right. The problem about paycheck is that it could be so addictive. The moment you're in, you find it hard to get out. That's why it is usually difficult for salary earners to start their own show.

anonymous 3 years ago

Your opinions on why people are poor is a mile high pile of crap. You have never lived in real poverty, nor have ever experienced circumstances far beyond your control. Let me see you go down to a poverty stricken country like Haiti and give this speech to a large group of their people. They would stare at you, like you are some kind of idiot from a far planet. You don't have a clue as to what real success involves. You don't measure success in currency. Circumstances DO control what people can or cannot accomplish in life. Most of your so-called successful people are bobble-headed morons.

anonymous 3 years ago

lets see i guarantee who ever wrote this is someone not struggling with money obviously.....these ten reasons are far from the real truth the writer would obviously not know about. These seem to be opinions of the ignorant who think they know it all....timm_brantley they need not go s far as Haiti all they have to do is go to the slums of their neighborhoods or the ghetto....if life and making money was so simple as giving me ten dumb reasons why people are poor i bet nobody would have a financial struggle. like timm said money doesn't equal success in life and he is right people don't always have the same opportunities etc. and go through diff things

anonymous 3 years ago

BlondeNAmbitious- I think there were some good general points, but off the mark on some. I am successful, and I think 'The Secret' is great...those that don't know how to use it (like the poor), will think it is a 'Pie-in-the-Sky' miracle, but still fail. One has to understand what the 'Secret' actually is, and know how to apply it (i.e. it is not tangible until you actually get it). One needs to read on the law of attraction (also part of 'The Secret'), to understand how one's attitute can make the difference in one's circumstance. Lousy at business, not necessarily...lousy at finances, absolutely! Slave for a paycheck (not really, if you take advantage of paid education, travel, on the job training, etc.).

anonymous 3 years ago

@anonymous: As a person who has faced many fears, anxieties and false starts to actually get a book published, I agree with quite a few points in this article. Be sure that you have actually done something with your life before knocking such information. And if you haven't even bothered to get beyond a bachelor's degree, don't assume you have the wisdom to offer such a scathing comment about anyone's work.

anonymous 3 years ago

Some good points but mostly crap, especially #7. Very contridictory especially the first and last paragraphs. And in #1, the last two sentences are you suggesting not to be a pawn but to create "pawns" out of human beings by having your own business? Hopefully you are suggesting for someone to own a one person business where they are the lone worker in that business. Because if you hire anyone to assist in the success of that business they are not merely a pawn but a necessity and you would owe all of them big time if the business becomes finanically successful. Think of your business as a lawnmower. The blades actually do the cutting but not if that hex head bolt is not attaching the blades to that necessary shaft that turns because the belt pulleys are being turned by a belt that was engaged by a lever that when pushed to the up position engaged a button that sent electricity through a wire to tell the belt and pulleys that it's time to start turning which turned the blades that were attached to the bearings by a hex head bolt. The electricity came from a battery that ran through a battery cable to the ignition that was turned by a key that started the motor because the spark plug created a spark that started the combustion in the cylinder which creates compression and all those moving motor parts (many) need oil in the oil resivor, that will propel the lawnmower on its wheels when the accelerator is pushed because the drive belt will turn the other spindle. To cut grass all the parts I named and so very many more must work correctly. The key, the ignition, the wires, the spark plug, the pistons lubed by oil, the belts, the pulleys, the nuts and bolts, the bearings, the wheels and of course the blades. One part is just as important as the other or else your lawn mowing business is not successful. A simpler way to be a successful business man is to create a business and then pay all of these parts (pawns/human beings) wages that will keep them on social programs and in the poverty/poor bracket so Mr. Owner can pocket 80% or more of the company profits and make generations of his own family rich. And that is how America is allowed to operate without remorse.

This guy reall has a bug up his.. over the secret.

Is his definition of the secret an accurate one? Just sit and envision money and it will come? I thought the secret was actually about changing your state, something the author recommends.

Changing one's state begins by changing the negative thoughts and beliefs that have been piled up over the years.

Maybe I misunderstood what the secret teaches, but without a doubt, any major life change has to first start with a positive change. Of course, I didn't think that was a secret either. I thought it was common sense.

Other than that, all valid points.

anonymous 3 years ago

@anonymous: I agree with you but...having a bachelor's degree does not mean you would know any better than the guy who is writing this article. I am doing an bachelor's degree in A.V systems engineering...and I don't know the first thing about business. Sure, I read the news and followed great people like Bill Gates because I am also a tech geek. But I know a lot about systems and computer stuff, not about how to make money. Sometimes I don't even care about the money aspect as long as I don't die of hunger and happy being a "slave" and not worry about business stuff, I'm just the guy who designs audio and visual systems without thinking of marketing, tell people how great my stuff is, other people are paid to do that, so I am happy just doing that.

anonymous 3 years ago

I think one of the biggest problems with articles such as these and even remarks made by others is the assumption that poor people are miserable. I have to say I am not rich, The things I have accomplished in my life are remarkable to me and most likely only me and in all honesty that is all that matters. I think the biggest problem that quote on quote "POOR" people face is society telling them that their standard of happiness is not good enough. I do not live in a mansion, I am not famous, I do not waste money on designer clothing or the newest gadget and believe it or not I am one of the happiest people I know. It is my opinion that the main reason people are poor is because society tells them that they are. Last time I checked my higher power is not the opinion of man and that is why I may not be rich or famous but will continue to be happy and grateful for the life I have. Don't get me wrong material things are nice to have but at the end of the day who cares. There are plenty of rich people who are still miserable the only difference is the whole world is stuck up their A** when the rich are unhappy. I have the benefit of living my life in peace with the people who matter to me. Sorry if this post sounded harsh but the point I am emphasizing is why do the "RICH" think they have the right to judge the quality of life of the "POOR"?????? If people would spend more time being grateful for what they have then complaining about what they don't then just maybe they could achieve what they dream.

@anonymous: The poor are not ignorant and there is nothing special about the rich that makes their review of a book any more valid than anyone else's. If you want to bash someone than please bash the person who wrote the article, instead of making condescending remarks about people who you think are less than, because to tell you the truth condescending remarks make you sound like a ... On second thought I am going to be a mature adult and not judge people I do not know, why don't you as well as the individual who wrote this article try it. God bless and have a wonderful day!

This article forgets to mention one thing; that is, that over 1/2 the workforce is in a week-to-week, paycheck to paycheck kind of situation. There IS no money to sock away, there IS no money for investments. Keeping the lights on and the food coming is about all they can manage. In spite of what "our" government says, the unemployment rate is FAR above 7.whatever-it-is-this-week mark set by the administration. Mare like 15, count the underemployed and we are touching 22%. These are the people that everyone ignores? No money to invest? No bankers want to talk to you. Had to ditch that 6-figure job for one paying 1/3 as much? No "Investment Counselor" can do dick for you. America has been cheated. We built this economy, and in return, Corporate America shifted their jobs and profits overseas, right in the middle of the biggest rip-off in the history..of EARTH.(No one in jail, of course). The thing that really amazes me is how divided Americans have become, with the rural and conservative poor fighting for the rich, and the middle class fighting for the urban poor and themselves. I always wondered why red states, the poorest in the union, would vote Republican. Guess that is why the wealthy own everything. They can manipulate the stupid.

@anonymous: Wait a minute, there, Jethro. 94% of those in America worth more than 10 million dollars INHERITED IT. No "Secret" there, just the lucky sperm club. Wanna know what Donald Trumps "Secret" was? Having a dad with 400 million that dies, so spare me. This whole idea of the "Self made" billionaire hasn't been possible for 30 years. With the exception of the tech guys(Who are in their 40's now) how many "self made" billionaires and even guys worth hundreds of millions are rare, so rare they are newsworthy; fully 70% of all businesses that start in this country fail within a year, so I grow tired of this "Just start a business" junk. The only ones that make are ones that have a pile4 of cash behind them..

@anonymous: So if someone gave you 400 million, you could transform that into 3.2 billion dollars? Interesting

Success to me: Becoming capable of what you can be.

Not everyone is capable (mentally and physically) or becoming rich or famous, were do not all have the same capabilities as each other. I might have to work harder than you just to achieve to same goals, he/she might have to work harder than me just to achieve the same goals. I agree with some if this article and reading always helps, the fact is that I am capable of enjoying my life and being successful if I work hard and plan. Successful to me might be owning 1 car and 1 house and paying off for the rest of my life.

These athletes and millionaires who give talks about "making it" is a bull shit, they are naturally gifted or talented to do this or inherited wealth, there are the 1 in 1 million type people.

value versus profit

you just build the value of your book to sell it to me so you can make a profit.

and that my friend will make you rich and leave me poor.

In #8, Unsuccessful People Subscribe To "The Secret"

the Secret is denounced, but following you speak of attracting, which is the principle of the secret along with action.

#7: Poor People Have Limiting Beliefs About Life and Money

3. You complain, thereby "attracting" and moving toward a negative reality.

#8 & 7:3 seems like a contradiction, as one must imagine or believe (have the confidence to proceed) and then act on.

This article is very apropos if you live in the US where there are so many opportunities available for anyone who is willing to do the hard work to succeed. It doesn't apply to most 3rd workd countries though due to the very limited opportunities available in those countries. Given the same criteria, with everything being equal, a person in the US will be at least several times richer that a person in another country, just on their salary alone. If you travel around the globe, you'll discover that the US is one of the cheapest countries in which to reside, with one of the highest salaries.

I feel like I have dyslexia because every question was a double question and the answers for each could easily be completely different. It made no sense?! I feel like a sane person in a crazy world- but, I'm sure I'm just a crazy person in a sane world.

Poverty has been around since the invention of money.

You want a quick simple solution to poverty? Rob people of their money and valuables.

It's hard to be poor... I am 13 years old and I am already experiencing life so hard... Recently, we are running out of money... Total ₱40.... It's so hard... Hard as f***.. This is my first time to experience being so poor... We cannot pay electricty bills and we don't know where to get money... I am really crying now... I don't know what to do.. My parents are arguing about that.. WE DON'T HAVE ANY FOOD TO EAT! UGHH... I don't even know why God doesn't answer my prayers...

I enjoyed the information. I scored honestly in the 11-20 range. Zero's on most. I am actually quite good at being able to go out and make money, but have not gotten over that last hurdle that will help me enjoy a comfortable retirement. My worst score was in re-inventing the wheel. I think I scored darn near a 10 on this one. I think I would have rather scored 4's across the board, than mostly 0's with a 10. I have known for a while that I need to stop doing that as well. Since reading this, I have already made a step to drop my 10 to a 5.

I have read a lot of people who say that their lack of schooling is holding them back from being wealthy. Well, I did not get my AA degree until I was 43. Setting a goal to get a degree is definitely not an impotent goal, nor one that is out of reach. Just an idea.

Thanks bunches, and make it a great day!

Wow successful people most be perfect super humans! All those rich people, if that's how you're measuring success, must be rich because they are utterly without flaws, even those who have earned money through inheritance, trust funds, wealthy relatives, luck, the old school the network, crime, fraud and lottery wins.

Well have you ever heard of any such people who have committed suicide or accidentally overdose? Apart fron tons of celebrities and all those wall street millioners who did, but the than that they are happy beings.

All those poor people living in Indian slums and starving Africans are obviously flawed creatures with crap attitudes.

You get the picture, and you know where you can stick your advice ;)

The "poor" level you are refering to is not close to the reality of real "poor" that exists in so many countries. When you are born struggling to get a dolar a day to eat, go and tell that person its all a state of mind..... Wow!!!

This article is not rooted in fact and therefore should not be taken as fact. The meritocratic ideology of the US has skewed the population's perceptions of the poor and led to the mindset that "they're lazy" or "they don't deserve wealth." The fact of the matter is that those in poverty actually work MORE and HARDER than those who are of a higher class, and they are the ones most at risk to be taken advantage of.

This article confuses impoverished people with unsuccessful people. If you are looking to be successful, this may actually be beneficial. However, this article poor shames and paints a negative picture of those living in poverty.
