In this day and age, technology is making things easier than ever, and many of our daily transactions happen virtually. GCash is one of the Philippines' leading mobile money services for purchases, bill payments, remittances, and more. Because it is operated by Globe, a telecommunications company, you can also use it to buy loads for Globe, TM, and other networks. I am an avid GCash user, and I always use it to pay my electric and internet bills. It's easy, hassle-free, and has no additional cost.

Meralco is the largest electric company in the Philippines, servicing a total of 22 cities and 89 municipalities. For this reason, paying Meralco bills has become part of the monthly routine of most Filipinos. For some, this can be a hassle. In this article, I will show you how easy it is to pay your Meralco bill using your GCash App. The next section includes step-by-step written instructions. There is also a gallery that features a screenshot of each step to help guide you through the process visually.

Note: If you are interested in trying this payment option but don't yet have a GCash account, you will need to go to their website and create one before following these instructions. You can then download the GCash app and proceed to pay your bills and use the platform's other services.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open the GCash app and enter your 4-digit MPIN.
  2. Make sure that you have enough money in your account to cover the bills you plan to pay. Then click the Pay Bills icon.
  3. Find and select the Electric Utilities icon. This will lead you to a list of electric utility companies in the Philippines.
  4. Scroll down until you find Meralco. You can also click the heart beside it (to add it to your favorites) so that you can find it easily the next time you want to pay your Meralco bill.
  5. After you click Meralco, you will be lead to a page where you will need to fill out your billing information. You only need two things—your Meralco Reference Number and the total amount of your payment. You can easily find the 26-digit reference number and the total amount due at the bottom of your billing statement. See the image in the gallery below for reference. Update *2021: Customers don't need the MRN anymore when paying their Meralco bills. All you need to enter is your account number and the amount of your payment.
  6. Make sure you enter the correct billing information. If you'd like, you can also enter your email address to have an official receipt sent straight to your inbox after your payment. After you've confirmed that the information you've entered is correct, select Next. You're done! You will automatically receive a notification on your app. This officially acknowledges your payment to Meralco.

This process only takes a few minutes and saves you the hassle of traveling to your local Bayad Center and paying extra fees just to take care of your monthly bills. You can also use the app to pay for your internet, phone, cable, water, and other services that are listed on your app's "Pay Bills" page.

Question: Can I pay an overdue Meralco bill using GCash?

Answer: Yes. You can pay for overdue bills on GCash but only before you receive a disconnection notice. They said that if you already have a notice, the MRN would not work anymore.

Question: I tried paying my Meralco bill. But it continually says to double check my MRN. I checked it so many times correctly but the app still doesn't accept it. What is the problem?

Answer: If it says to double check your MRN then it's either you've just put in your MRN wrong or your MRN doesn't work anymore (GCash states that MRN would be invalid once you've already received your disconnection notice. In this case, you would have to pay your bills at your nearest Meralco Branch). Have you tried scanning the QR Code instead? If it still doesn't work, you can contact GCash Care on Messenger to assist you thoroughly.

Question: I tried paying through GCash. But when I opened my Meralco app it still shows the bill is unpaid. It's almost 24hrs and my payment still hasn't reflected yet through the Meralco app. What can I do to ensure my payment is registered by Meralco?

Answer: It also happened to me before. What I did was I waited two days for the Meralco app to reflect my payment. You will not have to worry as long as you've already received payment notifications either from the GCash app, email, or text message. If you think it's taking too long, you can email support@gcash.com or call 2882 to make sure the payment has pushed through. Just provide them with your proof of payment.

Question: The due date for my electric bill is tomorrow, and I paid today When it will be posted to their system that I already paid?

Answer: In my experience, it usually takes a few minutes/hours after payment. But the system says it may take about 24 hours before it will be posted. You don't have to worry though because once you've received your email/text message receipt, it means they've already received your payment, and it's already being processed.

Question: How much is the convenience fee of using the GCash app?

Answer: There is no convenience fee. Once you've paid through the app, you would see on your online receipt that the fee is waived.

Question: How do you pay Meralco with previous balance? Mine keeps saying invalid MRN and I'm using the scan QR code, it's not working.

Answer: If your QR scanner isn't working, you can try to manually input your MRN/Meralco Reference Number and other billing details. You can find the instruction in this article. If it still does not work, you can try to contact GCash Care for assistance to figure out if the problem is with the app or with your Meralco account.

Question: After getting the receipt from email, how and when will I know that my payment was accredited by Meralco?

Answer: You can always install and check on the Meralco app/website to make sure that the payment was posted. Note that the payment may take as much as 24 hours to reflect on your Meralco account.

Question: Is there any other option for the “Pay For” category. Because I can’t proceed with payment for my previous balance. What should I do?

Answer: As per "Pay For" option, it seems like there's only one: "Total Current Amount". Have you tried inputting/adding your current balance and the previous one in one payment? I haven't tried this but there's a possibility that it's actually how it should be done, given that there's only one option for payment. But if you've already tried this, you can check if you already have a disconnection notice. They said that your MRN would not work anymore if you already have a notice, which means it's best to find another payment option outside of the app. You can also message GCash Care on messenger for further assistance.

Question: Are they accepting 2 months bills of Meralco in one billing?

Answer: Yes, I believe they do. You have to input the total amount of both months and not separately. But make sure that you still don't have a disconnection notice because that would mean that your MRN would not work anymore. You can also message GCash Care on Messenger if you have more questions.

Question: What does SOA mean when I pay my Meralco bill online using GCash?

Answer: SOA means Statement of Account or billing statement.

Question: Is there a charge for paying Meralco bills?

Answer: The last time I've tried, there's no charge for Meralco bill payments.

Question: How do we know or how can we check if the payment of bills is already processed or posted with Meralco?

Answer: I suggest you download the Meralco app or visit your Meralco Online account to check your billing information and balance. Note that payments can take up to 24 hours to reflect on your account balance.

Question: I paid my overdue bill in Meralco via GCash and my transaction was successful. I've got my email receipt after the transaction. The thing is the bill I've paid has a disconnection notice. The disconnection notice came late 2 days after my payment. Will my payment be posted?

Answer: It seems like you don't really have to worry about this specific transaction. You have received receipts and was notified that it was successful, so it's safe to say that your MRN was still working when you processed your payment and it would surely be posted soon.

Question: My relatives want to pay their Meralco bill using my GCash account, how many times can I use my account to pay other Meralco bills?

Answer: Hi. As far as I know, there is no limit to how many Meralco bills you can pay using your GCash account. The only limit that you should consider is the maximum transaction limit of P40,000 per day and a maximum transaction limit of P100,000 per month (both for incoming and outgoing transactions).

Question: I already received a text message from GCash. But Meralco said that the amount that I paid through GCash is not paid. How can it be that my GCash balance was deducted?

Answer: Payments make take up to 24 hours before it can be successfully posted on your Meralco balance. If your payment is still not reflected on your account after more than a day, it would be best to contact GCash as soon as possible.
