At my job customers would often turn in misplaced gift cards that had been dropped in the store if the gift cards weren't claimed by the end of the day they would be thrown out. I got fired for keeping the gift cards. I just assumed since they were going to get trashed anyways it was not a big deal. How do I explain that in a positive way in an interview?
There really isn't a positive way to spin this. You basically stole from the company, in a way.
The only real way to explain something like this was the logic you presented and admit you made a mistake. State you know why it was wrong and you know you won't do it again. Admitting to the mistake and learning from it could be the best way to go in this case.
