You can actually learn a lot about content writing by simply doing it. However, you can advance quickly if you take advice from someone who has been doing content writing for several years.

The right advice can help you double or triple your earnings in no time. So, if you aren't learning from the experience of others, you are essentially missing out on some of the money on the table.

I don't claim to be an expert on content writing, but I have had a lot of success in my freelance writing career. Maybe clients like my content because I do something right. In this article, I share nine key content-writing tips that I think all beginners should know.

1. Write a Compelling Headline

If your headline isn't attracting people to your article, then you won't get much traffic. A great headline can be the difference between a successful article and a failed one.

Search engines don't care much about your headline as long as you are using the right keywords, but people do. Since search engines care about people, they will rank your article lower if your headline isn't attracting them.

It is not easy to write a headline that stands out and makes it impossible for the viewer to not be intrigued. This is something that you will have to master with time and experimentation. Maybe you can ask a friend to give their opinion on the few headlines that you have come up with.

2. A Killer Introduction Is Necessary

There are several ways to do an intro right. If you have some authority on a subject, it would be great to mention why you are an authority in the beginning of your article.

It is important for the reader to feel that you are offering something that several other articles on the topic aren't. If the reader feels that way after reading the first few lines of your article, there is a really high chance that they will read till the end.

While writing the introduction, think about what your readers want and how you can help them get what they want. You just have to convince readers that you understand their needs and have the knowledge or expertise to help them.

Bonus Tips: Quote some stats to make the introduction even better. Or, in rare cases, you can write something controversial to hook readers. For instance, I could have written something controversial, like "Most content writers don't know how to write properly" at the beginning of this article, but that is not my style.

3. Research Everything

You could be one of the finest content writers out there and still end up disappointing your readers if your articles aren't well-researched. Research is the backbone of any article—even if it is on a topic that you have some expertise in.

There is always something more that you can add after doing research, and going the extra mile for your readers is what separates the good content writers from great ones. Make sure that you don't rely on just one source, and be sure to verify everything that you write because incorrect information can ruin an article easily.

4. Detailed Content for the Win

If you want to do well in the long run, you have to write content for people and not just search engines. People love content that goes into detail and adds to their knowledge. Nobody wants to read five articles when they can just get all of the answers they need from one article.

It is common for readers to scroll through your article quickly to see if it is worth reading or not. If your article is too short or unattractive, your bounce rate will be high, and the search engines will know that your content is not good enough to satisfy readers.

I am not asking you to write a 10,000-word article. It depends on the topic, but 2,000 words are enough in the majority of the cases. Don't force yourself to write more if you don't have anything to add.

5. Keywords Are Your Best Friend

Using your keywords well is important because the article won't reach the readers if you don't know how to use relevant keywords. The following are the places where you should use keywords.

  • Your title and description
  • Headlines (only the first headline is fine)
  • Anchor text
  • In the beginning of the article
  • At the end of the article

You have to ensure that the keywords aren't overused, or you will get a penalty and drop in rankings. My advice is to use keywords naturally and not to worry too much about using keywords.

A content writer should always consider the quality of their content before anything else. You will find yourself using relevant keywords naturally after practicing for a while. It can also be good to use several variations of keywords because search engines understand variations and their meaning really well.

Just look at how this article is structured and see how I have divided it into distinct sections to make it more readable. Since you are writing content for humans, you need to make sure that you break it into digestible components to make it more readable. Nobody wants to read a huge wall of text with no headings or breaks.

One brilliant piece of writing advice that I read somewhere said that you should always write paragraphs of different sizes to make it more interesting for the reader.

There are a lot of successful blogs that only include a line or two in each paragraph. Readers on the web seem to enjoy shorter paragraphs, so doing this could be a good move.

7. Good Photos Make Content Better

Photos, videos, infographics, and other types of visual content help the viewers in reading and understanding the content. You just have to make sure that the photos that you are adding are relevant and legal to use.

You can use tools like Canva to create infographics; you will surely be surprised by the high quality of the graphics you create free. The infographic that you saw earlier in this article was created using Canva.

Photos add spark to your content, and they increase the chances of your reader reading till the end. As long as you are not overdoing it, you should be fine. Just make sure that the photos that you use are either from the Creative Commons or the public domain unless you have explicit permission to use them.

This is something that is very obvious, but a lot of people forget to use this advice. I recommend that you set a daily writing goal of 500 or more words and keeping up with your writing consistently. This will build your writing habit and improve your content-writing skills at the same time.

First, you can write about the topics that you know most about. Next, you can write about topics after doing research on them. If you apply this tip properly, you will see a lot of difference in your content quality in a matter of months.

If you work with clients, it is important to create your own content and explore areas that you are passionate about. You can also create your own blog and write content there to not only improve your writing skills but also to eventually start making money.

9. Edit Like Crazy

Editing is where an experienced content writer does their best work. After proper editing, a rough draft of an article can be transformed into an amazing resource that will keep readers hooked till the end. You should also keep revising articles that you've already published to fix any mistakes you find and improve the flow.

There is no such thing as excess editing because this is what separates great content writers from good ones. However, if you are working with a client, you shouldn't spend too much time on writing an article if the job is a fixed-price job.

In simple words, the quality of your content and the time that you spend in writing it should depend on how much you are getting paid. Experienced clients know that you can't write the best content if they aren't paying you what premium writers charge. This doesn't mean that your content should be full of grammatical errors and typos, but it doesn't need to be top-notch to satisfy the client if the payment isn't high.
