Article Ideas to Get Your Writing Started
13 Free Ideas for Your Online Article Writing Work
In my previous article I offered 15 great ways to get your writing started. Making money from online writing is no mystery -- it's simply a matter of hard work, good English skills, and a little homework.
The first thing you need to think about is topic choice. Too often we get all hot for a new idea and start writing before we do even the smallest amount of homework. You need to think very clearly about what you are going to write.
This article, and the one before it, present my best advice for how to choose what to write about. I have broken the answer down into general topics, with a brief discussion of each one. I hope you get something out of this advice, and I hope you see my reasoning behind selecting these topics.
1. Healthy Aging
There are so many potential ideas related to this that it’s hard to count, but if you yourself are older, or if you’re caring for someone who is, then consider writing about your experiences, and what you know and have learned. People are searching for information about growing older, and you might be the one to give it to them.
I know where I'm going and I know the truth, and I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want.— Muhammad Ali
2. Parenting Tips and Health Topics
Articles written by parents, for parents often do very well in terms of traffic; these readers are also often ready to buy products based on your recommendations. Like elder care, kids' health is a specific health and wellness topic with a lot of search activity. If you have kids, you can come with good ideas by thinking about your daily life with them – what tricks, tips, ideas, and experiences are unique to you
3. Vacation Tips
Are you a globe-trotter, a frequent flier, or even an RV fanatic? Then you may come with a good online article idea just by offering to share what you know with the world. What are people searching for? Do you know how to answer their questions or guide them in some way? That right there is an idea for an article.
4. Camping and Roughing It
People who are searching for information about camping, fishing, and etc will be very receptive to your experiences, provided you communicate clearly and with a certain amount of humor. Do you know how to find and catch muskies? Thousands, if not millions of people are searching for fishing tips right now. Any other camping knowledge that you have, or can relate to, could make a good online article that people click on and read.
5. Biking, Bikes, and Gear
This is another great topic for writers with first-hand experience in the topic. People who are into bicycles are always looking for tips about bike care and gear. They are also receptive to articles about bike safety. If you bike, and if you can write, you have a ready-made opportunity to generate traffic to online articles about something you already know.
Writing the perfect paper is a lot like a military operation. It takes discipline, foresight, research, strategy, and, if done right, ends in total victory.— Ryan Holiday
6. Motorhomes and RV Living
This is one of those topics that has a built-in audience that is hungry for genuine, useful, and accurate information about their passion. Some of the most successful articles on HubPages come from people who have written several dozen articles on various aspects of RV living. These articles get excellent traffic and earn their authors passive income.
Like motorhomes, this topic appeals to a certain subculture of motorcycle riders and fanatics. Especially if you’re one of these people, you will know what they care about, wonder about, and are searching for online. Your writing on this topic will have a waiting audience, if you write well-researched, authoritative articles.

Do you ever struggle to come up with writing ideas?
8. Car Repair and Upkeep
You might be qualified to discuss new cars and their features, but a topic that's less dominated by manufacturers and other big names is do-it-yourself car repair. You really need to know your stuff for this topic, but it’s a huge part of internet searches, and you will find an audience ready and waiting for your expertise and experience. Write well and clearly, and don’t get out of your depth, and you can do well with this topic.
9. Arts and Crafts
Can you knit? Do you do projects with your kids? Are you a teacher? This is a very saturated topic in general, but there’s always room for a novel idea or hot product. If you catch the right mood and your timing is right, an arts and crafts article can really take off.

10. Love and Relationship Advice:
Definitely not my personal strong suit, but there’s an entire niche site on HubPages devoted to this topic. Unfortunately, much of what gets submitted on HubPages on this topic seems to be written by earnest but inexperienced young people typing with their thumbs; if you have good English skills and have something to say, you may come up with a good article.
11. Anything About Pets
This is a hugely popular topic with many opportunities for the online article writer. Look carefully at your proposed idea before you begin to write, because pet owners tend to be good writers and your idea may already have been done very well by somone else. Still, this is a fun and potentially profitable topic for online writers.
The heart and soul of good writing is research; you should write not what you know but what you can find out about.— Robert J. Sawyer
12. Making and Saving Money
This one of the so-called “YMYL” topics – it stands for “Your Money, Your Life.” There are so many articles on the internet about these general topics, much of it bad, misleading, or downright fraudulent, that Google has narrowed the flow down to a trickle. Only the most time-tested and authoritative sites make it onto the top returns (SERPs). Go ahead and give it a shot, though, because the sheer volume of people searching these topics means there’s always an audience.
13. Tattoos and Piercings
This one is near and dear to my heart (literally). This is the quintessential subculture topic, which means there’s an automatic audience if you have the right tone, approach, and really know your stuff. However the downside to subcultures is that they are by definition small, so you’ll need to keep that in mind when you choose your article topics.
