Viryabo, always a games buff for over five decades. From snakes & ladders at a young age, chess as an adult, and now to video and e-games...

There are numerous "making money online" ideas for those who wish to earn some money on the web, but about the most popular ones amongst teenagers and young boys is beta game testing.

The fact that kids and many teenagers make money online is nothing new. Lots of kids are earning money on the web and doing great too.

But earning money from home as a beta game tester is a great job that is worth doing if you can get one.

Many young kids are of the opinion that to work as a video game tester, all you need is to love playing video games and have the knack to spend several hours a day playing, but this is not so. There are learning curves and processes involved in game testing.

What is Video Game Testing?

For those of you who don't quite understand what this means, video game testing involves testing beta video games before they are released to the public for sale.

Testers are supposed to test "yet to be released games" for glitches, errors, and bugs that may occur or exist in the games.

As a game tester, you will be evaluating the gameplay and the quality of its sound and graphics. You are also expected to share your views on whether the game was enjoyable or not.

The idea behind this is to ensure that the game works perfectly as it is meant to before it can be released to the millions of buyers all over the world.

One of the perks of working online as a game tester is that you get to play the games first before anyone else does but things can get monotonous very quickly.

Playing and testing the same game for hours can become tiresome or even nerve-racking, and like many internet based jobs, things can get repetitive.

But then playing video games and getting paid for it is many video game playing youngsters dream, and most will do almost anything to "land" this exciting though demanding job.

Is it Easy Making Money Testing Games?

Yes and no.

You may love playing video games and probably spend eight to ten hours a day playing.

But if you are under sixteen, it is almost impossible, but you can start off by learning and interacting with others of similar interests.

Yes, you may think you are a good candidate for beta game testing job openings, but getting video game tester jobs isn't as easy as many may feel because being a high paying and enjoyable job;

  1. The competition is stiff. Every kid wants to be a game tester but job openings are few.
  2. Many game development industries prefer that you work on site.
  3. You may have to possess ample computer skills, though requirements may have become lenient these days.
  4. You need to be current on the latest high-tech devices and video games on the market.
  5. Have the skills of quick adaptation to the different strategies, systems, and techniques involved in video game playing.
  6. And most importantly, your English must be impeccable and fluent because you will have to write very detailed reports.

These are just some of the requirements for becoming a game tester but it also means that most enthusiastic but self-disciplined players can become a video game tester and receive an income for services rendered.

Many companies that do employ may make you wait for a number of weeks before hiring you.

But even though many kids have been lucky to get a slot in this great industry, it's very hard (though not impossible) to get one if you are under eighteen.

How to Become a Video Game Tester

Making money online as a game tester is interesting especially if you are a video gaming enthusiast, but it's a lot of hard work and you may have tight schedules and deadlines to meet.

But it's still fun if you can get the job and earn money online doing what you love best.

What you need to know if you wish to become a video games tester
What you need to know if you wish to become a video games tester

It is essential to learn a bit about game testing before thinking of asking for employment.

Reading books and searching online for further information goes a long way in preparing you for something that’s worth making a career out of.

It is good to know that the video game testing industry is highly lucrative with income ranging from $10 to $20 an hour.

Other than these, you don't need much more to become a video game tester. You need to get (or share) a computer with good internet access and some spare time.

What you'll be doing is playing games, and while playing, detect irregularities, unwanted electronic signals, bugs, glitches, technical problems, etc., and submitting what you find to the video games manufacturers. That's it!

Sounds hard? Not really, because you don't need experience as such, nor do you need a BA degree in marketing to do this.

And if you are smart and resourceful you can do this without even having to finish high school. And you can keep making money on-line constantly because the more games you can test, the more money you will earn.

The game development companies that will employ you to play and test their video games will give you the latest and greatest games that are yet to hit the stores.

They do have programmers who abound in their industry, but programmers are not game players in any way.

And as companies find it too expensive to hire full-time video game testers to test their products, they, therefore, employ youngsters and pay them well to test and play their newly developed games.

Testimonials from Young Video Game Testers

New York, NY.

Benefits of Game Testing Jobs

If you are lucky to be hired, there are a number of perks that come with this online money-making job.

      Hi there,

I read all of your post and since I've worked for Nexon, I know what is meaning working as a Quality Assurance in a serious place. It's not just playing the game... Sometimes it could be very tiring, especially when you are forced to test a game that you don't like for over 1 or more years. Otherwise, I wish to you all a huge luck for your future experience as a Game Tester/QA.

Hello Gloria, I'm sorry for the late reply.

My advice to you is to search for forums online where you can mingle with the community, read their posts, ask questions, etc... You'll get the best information that way.

Search from Google, for example lets say you are searching for "video game testing", in the Google search box, type in:

video game testing+forums and hit the search button.

Or in the case of videography, type in: videography+forums and hit the search button

Read through the results and check some out. Take it from there.

      I hope this helps Gloria.

Jeez, some of the kids commenting here really can't type well. Either that or they're not good at English. You know it isn't all just fun and games you have to have some English skills because you have to write well detailed reports. You aren't just playing the game you have to analyze it and see where the bugs are or where are the rough patches and then report them to the company. I don't think that this kind of job is for 11 or 13 year olds. I think maybe you should explain that in your article above. This is coming from a 17 year old who has tested and now I make small games with a group of friends. (we're just learning the programs right now). Learning to program is a pain in the butt, but I think rather than small kids looking for jobs in video game testing, I think they should be encouraged to learn more about the games they love. You guys are to young. It bothers me just how many of you believe it is just getting paid to play when it isn't. Well those are just my two cents.

      Edward, Ashontee, Miguel hi.

You guys are good candidates for game testing jobs because of your ages.

But it is rare to find advert for game testing jobs flying around the web because the competition is so fierce.

The good news is that you can join membership sites and be active in their forums. They have both the connections and ads for all job openings for beta game testing, game design, etc. Through them you will get lined up for interviews. You can start off from there.

There are openings at Sony, Microsoft, and all the known game developers (and a great number of smaller companies), but to know how to apply, how to prepare resumes, etc., can be achieved through these membership sites.

So get to work! :) and stick to it.

      Best of luck

      Hello Cyril,

You didn't mention your age, but its a great thing that you have an interest in video game design & development.

Those who have some knowledge of these aspects of games are usually preferred by employers in the game industry.

This is not to say that only those knowledgeable get video game testing jobs. But the competition is VERY stiff.

I suggest you join forums where you can interact with young people, video game lovers, designers, etc. You will learn a lot from the interaction and this will take you steps closer to your dream.

      All the best.

    • viryabo profile image

Hi Cara, Zman and Hunter. As i have mentioned in my earlier comments, you are too young to get a chance of landing a video game testing job.

Thousands of kids worldwide want the same, so competition is stiff.

Start to read up on game design and development just for the fun of it.

Take it a step further by learning about game design in your spare time.

Such knowledge will give you an edge by the time you are 18 because you will know what many seeking for the job don't know. Thats a sure faster way of getting great jobs in the game industry, be it game testing or game development and design.

      Best of luck.

You are too young to get a good chance of being a game tester now Murphy, but you can in the future, when you are about 18.

You will get much better chances then.

It is good for you to continue with your passion, read about it and learn more about what it involves. By the time you are ready to apply for jobs, you may be one of those who will have an edge over others.

      Best of luck Murphy.

With determination and true passion, yes Quickshot, you may have a chance.

You can achieve whatever you wish to, including becoming a game tester, if you are focused and determined.

I'm 19 year old female and love to play video games. I've been playing for about... maybe 10 years? I don't really remember... but I've been thinking of getting a job as a beta tester, but with no luck... I used to have the ps2 and wii, but we had to get rid of them and I currently have the 3ds and still play it... too much I might add. Do I have any chance at all on becoming one?

Hi Roger. I must admit that you are a good candidate for game testing, seeing that you are a skilled and passionate game player. Have you ever considered game design and development too? Its worth giving a thought.

      Best of luck Roger

Hello Corey, Yes, it has happened, but its not common to find guys under 18 getting game testing jobs.

Those who do have a little more to offer than their passion. My article on "5 ways to find game testing jobs" might help. It tells of things you can get involved with to get into the world of game testers. If you consider some of those ideas, you may have a better advantage to get a job even if you are under 18.

Hope this helps. best of luck.

Wow! He must be a brilliant young chap. His talent in game playing and his passion for it can be channelled positively in my honest opinion. It must not go to waste unless he begins to loose interest in the near future.

You are right about game testing, plus he should go a step further than that. He needs something challenging that he can possibly become a genius in.

Im thinking about game design and development. Ask him if he will love to design a game, just as someone designed the ones he loves. I bet he will love to.

Start him off by letting him read or research (with him) about the simple basics of game design. There are books that will help guide him along. Then further down the road buy him an easy to use game design software. He can play and learn etc....

In another 8 or 9 years he can apply for game testing jobs, just to learn more about the intricacies of game development, plus earn some extra money in the process.

If the "fire" of his passion still glows, he can go on to college and obtain a degree in game art/design/development.

      The sky is the limit.

You are handling the issue beautifully and that's what he needs. Guiding him along and helping him nurture his passion into a highly lucrative new age career is really great.

      Hope this helps.

I think you have a future genius game developer and designer in your hands right now. You are blessed.

Best of luck Staci, and thanks for visiting.

Thank you for this informative site, i am a frustrated mother of an 8 year old. My son is only allowed to play video games during the weekend and on a non busy day he can play for 3-5 hours. In two 3 hour sessions he can clear a game. Is this Normal? I know every parent thinks their child is special, I am a realistic person, although he is adorable, I just don't know enough about games. We have x-box, PS3, WIi, DSI and PS2. I am sure I make most parents cringe but we let him play Call of Duty, Red Dead redemption, Modern Warfare, James Bond eagle eye, halo, Simpsons and ect. No matter the level he's done it just 2 days! He's been doing it since he was 4, so we have became pros a game renting since the challenge is a breeze. I don't think a game tester is place for an 8 year old, I just don't know if we should be trying improve a skill I find a tad annoying but something he is good at and enjoys doing. I am not game savvy, so clearly he doesn't get it from me, I just don't know how to challenge him or direct him for a possible gaming future!

Hello Brittani, you are still too young at 14 and the likelihood of getting a video game testing job at a young age is slim. 18years and above have better chances.

Learn about game testing, game design while you wait to grow a bit older.

      Hey guys :)

I have been searching for a site where I can get a video game job for a few hours now. I am turning 16 years old in this summer, and I have told my parents about this site and am allowed from my parents to try this possibility and play violent games.

I am playing about 3-5 hours daily, and I am never getting tired, but i know when i have to stop for the day, hehe.

I am playing on a ps3, but I am gonna buy a brand new gaming computer soon when im getting enough money.

If there is any possibility for me to get a job with game testing, please contact me at this email.

      - William
